Garter Lane welcomes Ireland’s longest running theatre ensemble, Blue Raincoat Theatre Company to perform Shackleton, a story of endurance on the Antarctic’s icy Weddell Sea.
“Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold . . . safe return doubtful.”
Shackleton tells the story of the sinking of the ship Endurance on the Antarctic’s icy Weddell Sea in 1916, and the subsequent escape of the Irish expedition leader Ernest Shackleton and his crew from the Antarctic over a period of eighteen months, finally arriving to safety at the whaling station in Stromness on the South Atlantic Island of South Georgia.
This unique story of will power, determination and, above all, hope is told by an ensemble cast, complemented by original footage and scaled puppetry.
Blue Raincoat Theatre Company’s production “Shackleton” premiered in Sligo at the company’s venue The Factory Performance in the Spring of 2016. It subsequently toured to the Project Arts Centre in Dublin, the Tron Theatre Glasgow and Traverse theatre Edinburgh in the Spring of 2017.
