Donal O' Connor Memorial Cycle

Donal O’ Connor Memorial Cycle is a family friendly cycle that takes place on Saturday the 9th of September to mark World Suicide Prevention Day. This is the sixth year of the cycle, which culminates in a balloon release in memory of all souls lost to suicide.

This year the route is moving to Waterford Greenway, which is a safe, scenic, level route that is perfect for all ages and abilities.

There are FOUR start points and FOUR routes all ending at Coach House Coffee in Kilmacthomas, where the balloon release will take place:
Waterford WIT West Campus 23K
Waterford Kilmeadan 13K
Dungarvan Durrow 13K
Dungarvan Town 23K
All funds raised go to Waterford Marine Search & Rescue which was set up in January 2010 by Declan and Darryl Barry to provide Waterford city and county with a 24 hour; 365 days-a-year search, rescue and recovery service. Since January 2010 the service has prevented over 100 people from entering the river with the intention of taking their life. The entire service is voluntary and nobody takes a wage.
The Donal O’ Connor Memorial Cycle is always a very family friendly event and helps not only the designated charity but also helps to promote suicide awareness. Organiser Mags O’ Riordan lost her husband and brother both within a short space of time of each other to suicide and is very dedicated to creating and promoting suicide awareness. The Donal O’ Connor Memorial Cycle is a legacy not alone to her own family members but to all souls lost to suicide. This is also a great opportunity for people to get together and have a chat, have fun and get the message out there that “It’s OK not to be OK“.
There will also be a balloon release when everyone arrives at Coach House Coffee (the  old workhouse) in Kilmacthomas for participants friends and relatives and all souls lost to suicide. All balloons are yellow as are the participants T-Shirts because yellow is the colour of HOPE.
Roddie Cleere from WIYP spoke with Mags on Waterford Greenway about the cycle……

Donal Jacob from  Greenway Waterford Bike Hire is offering discounted bike hire to all cycle participants. Just show your registration to avail of a reduced rate of €10 per bike (usually €15)!!
