The Irish state research vessel R.V. Keary is an aluminium catamaran designed for near shore survey work. She is ideally suited in this role due to her stable twin hull construction, shallow draft, retractable equipment pod and hydraulically operated A-Frame and winch.
The R.V. Keary is typically crewed by a team of three individuals: skipper, surveyor and data processor. Acoustic sensors attached to the vessel record characteristics of the seafloor and shallow sediment. The R.V. Keary operates primarily in Irish waters as part of the INFOMAR programme, a collaboration between the Geological Survey and Marine Institute, but has also surveyed in UK waters as part of the EU-funded CHERISH programme.
To confirm the R.V. Keary will be open for visitors on Saturday and Sunday 10am. – 12 and 2pm. – 4pm.
Artform Dunmore East School of Art invites you to a Free Open to All Evening Outdoor Painting Sessions in collaboration with the plein air artist and tutor Dave West.
Weather permitting, the Paint Out will take place at the Dunmore East Lighthouse on Sat 18 May from 7 to 9pm. After a short demo Dave will work individually with the participants.
The event is free and open to all. Participants are invited to bring their own easels and art materials. The event is weather dependent – please follow updates on Artform FB page @artformdunmoreeast.
The walk includes Dunmore East Harbour and the Coastal Path that connects Dunmore East to the picturesque Portally Cove. The walk to Portally is easy to moderate but the return walk is a little more difficult as there are is a steep enough uphill climb. The path is situated above many inlets carved out of the conglomerate red sandstones, known locally as pudding stone that was used to build the harbour in the 1820s.
Also watch out for the Kittiwake colony, the Fulmar, a seagull-like sea bird, the red-legged Chough, an increasingly rare bird, Cormorants and Shags, the areas rich flora and fauna and the occasional seal popping its head up close inshore or basking in the sun on the rocks. The scenery is stunning and the walk is safe at no point are you too near the cliff but do keep a close eye on children during the walk. The views along the walk are both breathtaking and stunning.
Tickets are available from Dingley’s Shop in Dunmore at €10 each – Places are extremely limited!
The walk will leave from Dingley’s at 8am each day!
