‘A Night for Billy’ a tribute to WLRFM broadcaster Billy McCarthy took place on Friday night last at the Theatre Royal in the city. In what can only be described as a fitting tribute to Billy, Waterford’s finest talent took to the stage to celebrate his live and passions of which music played a major part.
Billy was a part of the furniture in many a Waterford home with his award winning show ‘Deise AM’ broadcasting for the past 27 years. He was like one of the family who visited our kitchens 5 days a week for a cuppa and a chat. Sadly Billy passed away all too soon at the age of 62 in November of last year.
The show which was sold out in minutes, when the tickets went on sale, had Waterford’s top performers from theatre and music took to the stage in an epic show of talent and as a fund raiser for one of Billy’s favourite charity the Holy Ghost Residential Home.
A Night for Billy was presided over by Billy’s colleagues Mary O’Neill and Oliver Carroll who are the presenters of the ‘Big Breakfast Blaa’ on WLRFM there were performances from Carrie Crowley, Des Manahan, Richie Hayes, Vanessa Whelan, Donna Roche, Andrew Holden, Dermot Keyes, David Flynn, Jamie Murphy Gabrielle Cummins, Clodagh Power, Vicki Graham, Greta Rochford, Jim Nolan, The Bilberry Goats, Intonations and Madrigallery choirs all performed on the night.
Here is a snipit from the show with the cast singing ‘My City of Music’ written by the late great Denny Corcoran!
